Assistant Visitor Experience Manager

Overview

The Design Museum is seeking an experienced, energetic Assistant Visitor Experience Manager to help lead and inspire our Visitor Experience team. With around 80 Assistants and over 50 Welcomer Volunteers, the department plays a central role in welcoming and engaging every visitor and supporting exhibitions, programmes and events across the museum.


About the role

The Assistant Visitor Experience Manager will support the smooth and efficient delivery of visitor operations, ensuring our teams are motivated, informed and equipped to deliver a warm and high‑quality experience.

Working closely with the Visitor Experience & Operations Manager and Deputy Visitor Experience Manager, as well as colleagues across Exhibitions, Learning, Events and Estates, you will play a key role in supporting operations, team leadership and daily duty management.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Coordinating daily operations, including rota support, staff allocation and planning for public areas.
  • Leading and motivating Visitor Experience Assistants through briefings, coaching and ongoing
    support.
  • Supporting training and engagement initiatives to maintain high standards of welcome, customer
    service and upselling.
  • Delivering duty management on a rota basis, including opening, closing and leading safety and
    emergency procedures.
  • Producing daily planners and essential documentation to support smooth museum operations.
  • Working collaboratively with internal teams to ensure exhibitions, programmes and events run
    effectively.

About you

We are looking for someone who brings:

  • Experience delivering excellent customer service in a public‑facing environment, with confidence in
    leading and motivating teams.
  • Experience in managing rotas and supporting daily operational planning.
  • Knowledge of duty management processes, including health and safety and incident response.
  • Strong organisational, administrative and communication skills, with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in commonly used office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • A proactive, solutions‑focused approach and the ability to remain calm and effective in busy or
    high‑pressure situations.

Terms and Conditions

Salary: Up to £29,890 per annum (rising to £31,086 with effect from 1 August)

Holidays: 33 days (25 + 8 bank holidays) & Christmas Eve (museum closed)

Hours: 35 hours / 5 days per week, on a rota basis, including weekends, evenings, and bank holidays

Location: on-site at the museum
