Retail Sales Assistant

Overview

The Design Museum shops, including the online shop, sell a unique selection of classic, beautiful, new, and cutting-edge books, objects and gifts focusing on architecture, furniture and all aspects of design from graphic design to fashion, with every purchase supporting the Design Museum.

We are currently looking for a permanent member of staff to work 28 hours per week, 4 days per week (on a 4-week rolling rota pattern).

Customer service and shop presentation

  • Welcome and positively engage every visitor to the museum shops and consistently deliver the highest standards of customer service.
  • Maintain high visual merchandising standards across all shops, following visual merchandising plans.
  • Help exceed all retail sales targets in the shops through proactive interactions with our customers and rapid recall of product knowledge.

Shop operations

  • Operate our EPoS system in a secure and efficient manner, including all elements of cash handling and opening/closing till procedures.
  • Mitigate against stock shrinkage through remaining alert, ensuring stock is secured and reporting any losses to the management team.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards, ensuring all stock, display equipment and retail fixtures are clean and tidy, and that point-of-sale information is accurate and in pristine condition.

Stock management

  • Participate in regular stocktakes and counting of stock always ensuring accuracy.
  • Regularly replenish shopfloor displays, maintaining high standards of visual presentation, and assist with stock movement from the stockroom.
  • Assist with deliveries ensuring that stock is safely and neatly stored in the stockroom and that relevant paperwork is completed accurately and without delay.

Person specification

Essential - Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Experience of working in a retail environment, or similar.
  • Confidence and ability to proactively sell in busy environments and exceed targets.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a passion for delivering great customer service.
  • Good visual merchandising skills and excellent recall of product knowledge.
  • Flexible approach to a range of retail tasks such as fulfilling online orders and stockroom duties.
  • Team-spirited.

Salary: £20,380 per annum (based on a full-time equivalent of £25,475 per annum)

Holidays: 25 days pro rata + Christmas eve (museum closed)

Hours: 28 hours/4 days per week, on a 4-week rolling pattern, 0.8 FTE

W1 – Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat

W2 – Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat

W3 – Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat

W4 – Mon, Tue, Wed, Fri

Location: This role is based on-site at the museum.
